#MalcolmGarrett – The Visionary Designer Behind Punk & New Wave’s Visual Identity In this episode of POP the History Makers, Steve Blame talks with Malcolm Garrett MBE, one of the most influential graphic designers in modern music and visual culture. Born in Northwich, England, Garrett studied typography and graphic design before making his first major impact on the scene as a second-year student designing artwork and posters for the Buzzcocks, including their breakthrough visuals in the late 1970s. His work helped define the aesthetic language of post-punk and new wave, blending bold colors, geometric forms, and innovative typography that became instantly recognizable in youth and music culture. Throughout the 1980s, Garrett’s design influence expanded as he worked with major artists and bands such as Duran Duran, Simple Minds, Boy George, Magazine, and Peter Gabriel — including iconic album covers for Duran Duran’s early albums like Rio, Seven and the Ragged Tiger and Arena. He founded the design group Assorted iMaGes in 1977, later co-founded the digital agency AMX, and pioneered the integration of digital and interactive design at a time when the field was just emerging. Garrett has also been a creative director at Images&Co and is deeply committed to design education and creative community building. In recognition of his impact on design and culture, Malcolm was appointed MBE in the 2020 Birthday Honours for services to design and was one of the first designers inducted into the Design Week Hall of Fame. 🔗 Visit his official site: https://www.malcolmgarrett.com/ Tags Malcolm Garrett, Malcolm Garrett interview, Malcolm Garrett designer, Steve Blame podcast, POP the History Makers, graphic design in music, album cover designer, music artwork legend, Buzzcocks artwork, Magazine band design, post punk design, new wave visual culture, iconic album covers, music branding, design and music history, British graphic designer, punk rock artwork, record sleeve design, music industry creatives, behind the scenes music, legendary music interviews, 70s punk design, 80s music graphics, creative direction music, visual identity in pop culture Keywords Malcolm Garrett POP the History Makers, Malcolm Garrett Steve Blame interview, Buzzcocks album cover designer, post punk graphic design pioneer, iconic punk and new wave artwork, music branding and visual identity, legendary album sleeve designer, graphic design history in pop music, behind the scenes music creatives, Malcolm Garrett design career highlights, how album artwork shaped music culture, British music design legend
