When Londonbeat shot to the top of the Billboard charts in February 1991 with “I’ve Been Thinking About You,” Jimmy Helms saw a lifelong dream finally come true. He was just a few months shy of his 50th birthday — living proof that sometimes it takes a little longer, but it’s worth the wait.

Jimmy wasn’t exactly a newcomer to success either. Back in 1973, he scored a hit with “I'm Gonna Make You an Offer You Can't Refuse,” a song that cleverly borrowed its title from the legendary line in The Godfather. With a voice that could easily be called one of the best soul voices ever, Helms carved out a place for himself in music history.

This interview was recorded when Jimmy was in his 80th year, and at that time he was still out there doing what he loves, touring as Londonbeat — the band that gave him his biggest moment in the spotlight. Along the way, Jimmy’s career has been full of twists and turns, from singing on TV commercials and recording solo albums to working with artists across genres before finding that magic formula with Londonbeat.
