Marcus Vere is a key figure behind one of the most distinctive and stylish bands to emerge from the UK’s 1980s pop and soul scene. As the keyboardist, songwriter, and producer for Living in a Box, Marcus Vere helped shape the band’s slick, sophisticated sound — a blend of synth-driven pop, funk, and blue-eyed soul that made waves on both sides of the Atlantic.

The band’s debut single Living in a Box shot into the UK Top 5 in 1987, becoming an instant classic — and their self-titled debut album cemented their reputation for polished production and catchy, emotionally resonant songwriting. Hits like Room in Your Heart and Blow the House Down followed, showing the band’s ability to fuse depth with dance-floor energy.

But there’s more to Marcus than chart success. Over the years, he’s carved out a path as a composer and innovator, working on music for film, TV, and children's projects, while continuing to evolve as an artist.

In this episode, Marcus talks about the highs and lows of pop fame, the craft behind the hits, the evolution of music technology, and why songwriting still matters more than ever.
