Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, behind the Iron Curtain, Louis C. Oberländer moved to Hamburg with his mother at five. In this interview, he recalls queuing for food with his grandmother in communist Bulgaria, discovering the piano, and forming his first band at eleven.
I first interviewed The Jeremy Days in Hamburg’s revolving TV tower in 1989, when “Brand New Toy” was getting played on MTV Europe. This time, I wanted to hear the story from Louis’s side of the keyboard. We talk about working with Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley, what happened after the band split, and how a trip to Los Angeles led to acting and photography. We also get into what brought The Jeremy Days back together after so many years.
